The Role of IT in the Globalization of Wyeth

The reason for analyzing Wyeth is to find out how the organization used information technology to become globalised. Companies that have various divisions need to ensure that they have extremely enduring business processes in order to integrate successfully into its core functions. In order to come up with effective architectures, organizations have to use business models that are decentralized and centralized and even both. This means that IT is a key tool because it can integrate and support the organization’s key functions. It is vital that an organization has a system, which is IT enabled because it aligns the vision and mission with information technology. On the other hand, IT assists an organization as it is cost-effective; efficient as well it assists in sharing information. The mentioned elements are keys to achieving success in any organization (Christensen and Anthony et al 2004).

Towards the end of the 1990’s a globalization strategy that was IT-enabled was introduced by Wyeth. This was for the purpose of creating an integrated and global company. Wyeth had to find a way of transforming its business processes through changing its underlying practices and systems. It is as a result of systems thinking that all this became possible. There had to be a transition of its IT to help in attaining a global vision from the previous low support priority (Mandviwalla and Palmer 2008). Some time back, globalization would not be achieved even though the structures and processes were centralized. Therefore, to be become a global leader, Wyeth had to have a strategy that centered upon information technology.

The top management at the organization should be commended for recognizing the need to have an IT enabled system. It is because of their initiatives that Wyeth business operations enabled it to become global.
