Parental Support and Educational Success

According to Hiatt-Michael (2010), most school age children spend over 65% of their time away from schools. The activities they undertake during such times are either designed or controlled by their parents. Notably, some of these activities affect learning in significant ways. As a result, Cox and Srange (2010) argued that parental support is one of the most important factors for educational success. Parents influence their children’s attitudes and aspirations. They ensure home learning occurs, monitor their children’s activities out of school, instill discipline, and lias with teachers in monitoring children’s development. As outlined by¬† Krach (2003), the relationship between parental support and success in education can be summed up through Epstein’s Framework of Six Types of Involvement. These include proper parenting, enhanced communication, volunteering, encouraging home learning, positive decision making, and communal collaboration.

Attitudes and perspectives of parents affect children’s attitudes towards learning and achievement. Commonly, most parents have more control over their children than any other persons. Because of this, parents have an opportunity to model their children’s behaviors to value learning and hard work. As explained by Hiatt-Michael (2010), while parental support to educational processes and direct involvement is responsible for more than 80% of educational success, non-involvement remains largely responsible for failure and indiscipline. When parents support learning, students score higher grades, attend school more often, and become highly motivated. They also experience reduced cases of drug and substance abuse, violent behavior, suspension, and expulsion from school. These can be achieved through behavior modeling, controlled home learning and closeness between children and their parents.

A number of factors influence the extent and nature of parents’ involvement in education. Notably, the law dictates that parents must be consulted in cases where their children must be subjected to learning content with religious, human, and sexual orientation explicitness (Steltz, 2010).
