Edward Abbey was an American renowned author and environmental activist. He was born in 1927 as the eldest child of Paul Revere and Mildred Postlewait in a family of five children. During that time, were living in Pennsylvania, but later moved to the US when he was still young. His father, Revere, was an atheist, socialist and anarchist, and carried out various jobs, including driving and lumberjack (Mongillo & Booth, 2001). His mother was a church organist and a school teacher. She taught Abbey literature and classical music. He started showing interest in writing when he was in high school. He wrote several articles that were published in the school newspaper, including Lit out for the territories (Mongillo & Booth, 2001). Immediately after graduating from high school, Abbey was employed as a US military police officer.
