Sustainability, according to most authors is defined as the ability to carry forward or give support or retain for a long period approaching perpetuity. On the other hand, Brundtland 1987 defines sustainable development as, “development that meets the ability of future generations to meet their individual needs” (1987 p.42). The current awareness on the resource and its conflicting and competing use has prompted the sustainable development to be a looked-for objective in the decision making. Due to the new demands as a result of the sustainable development concept, there has resulted the need for improved strategies to sustainable management for example, adaptive environment management. At the basis of this research proposal is the study of adaptive environment management in green roof projects in the English Midland. The significance of information, incorporation and participation are essential as science has brought various changes to entail people strongly in research and development (Lee, 2001). Particular attention is given to the problems associated with the technology and science as it seeks to more openly deal with the dimensions of sustainable development.
It is therefore essential for effective collaboration with various stakeholders connected with environmental problems in the development and enactment of solutions co-operatively, as compared to advocates in their own self-interests (Rubin and Rubin, 1999). Even though various things have been up for discussion about construction development, almost everything remains debatable and so leaving room for exploration and rediscovery. This is also because sustainable management matters progressively change with time due to changing co-evolving social, economic and environmental systems. Adaptive environment management gives chances for more collaborative and proactive approaches in resolving problems related to the environment (Strauss, 1988). This paper will therefore present an inquiry on the way sustainable development is supported by adaptive management and how it can be initiated and implemented in complex, regional or bigger-scale contexts. A research proposal on the Role of Adaptive Environmental Management in Sustainable Development is thus presented. As an example for sustainable development in the researcher’s region, the recent green roof initiatives in the Midland are taken as a basis to determine research participants.
In various places all over the world, managers have started shifting environmental management from individual planning tools for different economic sectors or single species towards an ecosystem management. This has been in line to increase the profitability of the houses or for construction of houses with Green Roofs. To improve decision making for sustainable development, new tools to facilitate common goal development and to test different scenarios have been required (Hill et al., 2006). The tools must have the ability to communicate the complexity and associated risks of the decisions and to permit broad stakeholder participation as integration of various aspects are involved. For this particular research project, the decision making processes and tools adopted in Green Roof Project plus the benefits associated with the green roofs in the Midlands are considered.
Integrating assessments use tools and inputs from multidisciplinary, multi-scale, and a variety of demographic and ethnic backgrounds to support decision making processes. Rather than the equilibrium-based view of decision making and policymaking, adaptive environmental management assumes an ever-evolving cyclic foal for societal organization structures centred on the behaviour of ecological systems (Lee, 2001).
Practically, in adaptive environmental management, making of policies is more as an experimental. In building some green roofs, the policies are monitored closely for their intended and unintended effects. Consequently, policies are appropriately left, adjusted, or fine-tuned in the progressing effort to develop an effective and efficient green roofs and majority of the techniques have changed to match the current and most convenient houses. Green roofs and adaptive environmental management, as in ecosystem management, ecological boundaries like watershed define the geographical scope (Haselbach, 2008). They may gain strength when a process-oriented approach from a team learning perspective is adopted, emphasizing collaborative learning.
As sustainability matters find their ways into building construction, the corresponding criteria of sustainability are established in the building design or in green roofs construction. The companies and organizations are encouraged to enhance the existing green houses for better. Since the introduction of green roofs, various queries regarding economic assessment have come up. For example, how sustainably-designed buildings (or green roofs) have effects on economic and environmental advantages have been debated in relation to the construction costs (Hill et al., 2006). One of the reasons that must have resulted to the decrease in the construction rates of green roofs must be due to its high costs. Most people believe that they cost more and so do ignore them.
The buildings occupants, the constructors have witnessed various advantages as well as disadvantages. The maintenance and procuring the building are suitable in upgrading to the recent and better houses. There is a perception that advanced sustainable solutions in maintaining and procuring the buildings in the end result of the increased price of the buildings (Haselbach, 2008).
Experts on the green roofs claim on overall economic and environmental importance of green roofs although no research has been carried out to quantify the claim considering the poor. The advantages of green roofs might not be easily seen during the construction but the houses occupants have testified on their merits. This is usually seen at the maintenance and restoration stages (Gummesson, 2000). Every projects has its own economics and a dissimilar performance and therefore various experts have to generalise and say that green roofs are cost-effective considering their managements.
