This case study is about a research which was conducted to find out how different people can respond to emergencies. It was predicted that when an unsuspecting person is confronted with an emergency situation, he must take the initiative to personally save himself from it. However, in order to do this, it is important for such a person to have the knowledge about the incident. After noticing that there is an emergency in a place where one is, one needs to act. The action should be preceded by interpretation because it will determine the type of response offered. Everyone must take the initiative to save oneself from falling victims of emergencies. This responsibility lies with the real victim of the emergency (Robson, C., 2000).

In order to prove the above assertion, a research was conducted using male Columbian university students. They were introduced into a room after filling questionnaires. After going through the first step, they were enclosed in a room in which smoke was puffed through the window. This was done without informing them. The experiment was performed without their knowledge because they were selected to act as naive bystanders. Later, their responses were observed and noted down.

While others had the potential to recognize the strange change in the room, others did not notice anything. Although none of them panicked, their behaviors were recorded, interpreted, analyzed and presented. It would be used to show how people have different abilities to react to the changes in their immediate environment without unnecessary influence from those around them.

In order to provide answers to the research question, the researcher opted to use questionnaires, interviews, experimentation and observations. These enabled the research to collect data which was later analyzed. After identifying the target population, a small sample of 24 male students was selected. This was to act as a representation of the entire student population in Columbia University. Before they were subjected into experimentation, they filled questionnaires. Later, they were urged to participate in the interviews.
