The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of team-based rewards on the employees. The paper carried out a literature review of the previous studies that have been conducted on the issue of team-based rewards and the effect that it had on employee satisfaction, productivity, costs and the general morale in organizations. The paper was written due to the widespread downsizing of companies in North America and the desire of companies to capitalise on team efforts to reduce their labour costs while at the same time improving their productivity. The paper tried to analyse the various methods that previous studies had used in carrying out their studies; these included laboratory test, anecdotal evidence and field studies; these methods will be used to determine the individual level factors such as cultural values and team related attitudes and how they influence employees’ receptivity to team based rewards.

The experimental method used in this paper is field studies since it involved observing workers in their normal workstations; the study was conducted among 618 employees of a 50 fortune insurance company divided in to 57 groups where the average number of members per group was 13. 86 per cent of the respondents wee female, 62 per cent were between the age of 20 and 35, 33 per cent were between 36 and 50 while only 5 per cent were above 50 years. Of the sample size, 82 per cent were Caucasian, 14 per cent were African Americans, 1 per cent were Asian Americans, 1 per cent were Hispanic Americans and were from other ethnicities.
