AMERICAN EMPIRE

The period between 1790 and 1850 marks an influential period of change in the American history. During the period of 1790s to 1850s, America was gradually moving from the concept of self-sufficiency and rugged individualism to a collective idea where there is group responsibility, and everyone is working together. American empire is a term concerning military, political, cultural and economic influence of the United States of America. However, American Exceptionalism refers to the belief that America is incomparable and that the nation does not conform to the norm. This paper intends to how and why the idea of American empire changed from the 1790s to the 1850s. Additionally, the paper will also discuss if this change changed the definition of American Exceptionalism.

The sources and advocates American empire idea range from established Marxist scholars of imperialism as an issue of free enterprise, to current liberal scholars contradicted to what they take to be forceful U.S. approach, to neoconservatives who accept the U.S. must grasp a magnificent part[1]. Debate about whether America has ever had an empire is muddled. The expression “government” is itself open to distinctive translations and definitions. Realms, as well, don’t generally apply the saying in delineation toward oneself. Then again, few deny that after the expiration of the Cold War, the U.S. is the real power on the planet. Whether the U.S. is, a magnificent or a non-royal force may be an inquiry of semantics[2].

While a couple of contended that a western limit should be set for the US, “the thought was tossed out” at the 1776 Constitutional Conference. What was later called Manifest Destiny would expand the Republic from ocean to ocean, negating the hypothesis that “a republic could be safeguarded just in a little empire. The first 13 provinces were the “home from which all America, South and North” would “be inhabited.” America was by “somehow” to turn into “an extraordinary and forceful empire: we must have an armed force, a war fleet” yet “freedom” would stay vital to the American soul, “freedom was the essential target. Jefferson’s empire, however, was to be one of “freedom.”
